Ecstasy Wears Emeralds:
Jaded Gentlemen Bk.3
Miss Gayle Renshaw has a dream, she dreams of becoming a doctor. In a time when
every proper miss is dreaming of a husband or ball gowns Gayle is determined to flout
society and live her dream even if it means making a deal with the devil himself. Luckily
Gayle knows just the devil, her aunt has long told her of the evil doctor that killed her
cousin. With information like that to hold against him Gayle is sure she can force him to
accept her as his apprentice.
Dr. Rowen West is in dire need of an assistant, the constant long hours and trying
patients are taking their toll on him. Miss Gayle Renshaw is not what he had in mind
however. Whoever heard of a female doctor! Of course there is no way a beautiful
miss like Gayle is going to be able to keep up with the work load required of an
apprentice so giving into her badgering won’t have any greater effect than stopping her
giving him a headache. Gayle is a greater challenge than Rowen expected, meeting
every trial he sets for her, finishing every task and proving herself to have the grit,
determination and intelligence required of a good doctor. In the midst of murder
attempts against the Jaded and their families Rowen finds himself in the odd position of
admiring and lusting after his apprentice. Will Rowen be able to protect Gayle and
convince her to trust him with her heart?
Ecstasy Wears Emeralds is an emotional roller coaster that will take you from laughter
to tears as Ms. Bernard skillfully weaves a tale of love and learning, friendship and
betrayal leading you down a merry path completely unaware of the emotional pitfalls
ahead. Do have tissues when you read Ecstasy Wears Emeralds as tears are certain
for anyone who has read the rest of the Jaded Gentlemen series at more than one point
I felt as if Ms. Bernard had reached into my chest, ripped out my heart and stomped it
under her dainty foot.
Gayle Renshaw is not your typical regency woman, rather than awaiting a man she sets
out on her own to determine her fate. Strong and very sure of herself she is quite
capable of being just as much of an ass as your typical regency gent. Assumptions are
the enemy of science so clearly this young hopeful doctor has a long way to go to make
her dreams come true Gayle is still very likeable and has a way of making you like her
even when you know she’s in the wrong.
Rowen is much more staid than the other Jaded Gentlemen. A definite Beta
personality he is often submissive to Gayles whims. You’d think this would make Gayle
happy but its not until Rowen puts his foot down that things heat up. Rowen is a
sweetheart and it’s impossible not to fall in love with this overworked rugged hero.
The natural progression of the romance is a nice change from the usual quivering thighs
of the average regency maiden or forceful seductions that tend to abound in regency
England. Gayles attitude towards sex seems very modern for regency England
especially for a woman of good standing. The sex is more warm bubble bath than
spontaneous combustion but it works perfectly when a more aggressive take on the sex
would have been jarring and unnecessary for the story.
You can’t have Rowen without the rest of the Jaded Gentlemen of course and this visit
with old favorites adds a level of emotional connection to Ecstasy Wears Emeralds that
will ensure you cannot put this book down. An urgent need to finish Ecstasy Wears
Emeralds kept me up until three am. Don’t say you weren’t warned! With three more
Jaded Gentlemen with stories of their own to tell, next up is Passion Wears Pearls with
Josiah Hastings the somewhat absentminded artist, I for one can’t wait to get my hands
on it!
