Heart of Vengeance
To find her father’s killer, Helena of York must pose as a Norman in the great halls of
Richard I’s England. Should she be unmasked, her life will be forfeit.
Stephen, Count of Dinan, once Richard’s friend and trusted knight, is outcast for
reasons shrouded in mystery. Known as the “Black Baron”, he is friendless in a glittering
world he despises. His only goal is to restore his honor and once again serve his king.
Helena’s only desire is to kill the man who destroyed her father and her future. Stephen’
s suspicions draw him into Helena’s web of deceit, and the two outsiders find
themselves tangled in a greater conspiracy that threatens the throne of England itself,
while their embattled hearts grapple with a far greater challenge.
Romance, revenge, and swashbuckling action abound in Heart of Vengeance, set in
one of England’s most interesting time periods. Helena, a Saxon noble and friend to
Robert of Loxley, another displaced noble Saxon (and otherwise known as Robin Hood)
wants to wreak vengeance on her father’s killer, marry Stephen, and help the poor. A tall
order for a woman in late-twelfth century England, where men—particularly noble
Normans—hold all the rights. She’s a good, strong character and easy to empathize
with.
Stephen is moodier. He’s the Norman warrior hero, used to winning battles and
tournaments and was once King Richard’s best friend. He is impetuous, and speaks or
acts before he thinks about the consequences, which is why he’s in trouble with Richard
and embroiled in Helena’s subterfuge. Each time it dawns on him that there are some
dire consequences, he withdraws and broods for awhile and then comes around.
Helena loves him anyway.
I really enjoyed the story and recommend it highly. I liked how Ms. Cooper-Posey kept
the story historically accurate, and she did much to bring out the shrewdness of Prince
John, who always suffers in comparison to his more glamorous parents and brother. He’
s still not sympathetic, but he wasn’t a sympathetic figure. My only accuracy issue with
the story was calling Helena’s father the Earl of Wessex, when they lived in York.
