Heir of the Dog:
Dog Walker Mystery Bk. 2
Ellie Engleman has stepped in the doggie do again. Finding another body is certainly no way to
impress the NYPD and Ellie once again finds herself a suspect in a murder. When the murder
victim turns out to be the homeless man Ellie and Rudy have befriended in the park things look
worse. Of course finding out Rudy, Ellie’s wisecracking canine companion, is the only
beneficiary of the will left behind is the last nail in the coffin. That is until Detective Sam Ryder
decides to go to bad for Ellie.
Detective Sam Ryder knows he messed up by not fulfilling his promise but his failed marriage
has him running scared. Now with Ellie back in his life Sam may get a second chance. Sam is
sure that Ellie is innocent; not that that’s going to matter to the cases lazy lead detective.
Finding out that Ellie is once again investigating a murder doesn’t bring Sam any relief from his
worries. When it becomes obvious that the killer is also hunting Ellie will Sam be there to keep
her safe or will Ellie once again find it’s better to trust her four legged companions?
With colorful descriptions and an emotional intensity constantly interspersed with laugh out loud
moments Heir of the Dog will quickly worm its way into your heart. Ellie is a little bit wiser
having obviously learnt some valuable lessons her first way round but still she trips over bodies
often enough that you start wondering if Rudy is looking for them to keep life interesting. Ellie’s
independent nature and strength under pressure really make her a fascinating character. Sam
is emotionally wounded and finally starting to realize that fact. He was a bit more likeable in
Heir of the Dog but that was possibly because he had fewer chances to be an ass.
While there was romantic tension between Ellie and Sam this time, a little bit wiser, Ellie doesn’t
fall for Sam’s romantic overtures. Rudy seems a bit more vocal in Heir of the Dog too and
someone has obviously given that boy some comedy lessons because he’s a laugh a minute.
With a mystery that will have you eyeing every older man Ellie comes into contact with a high
level of suspicion Heir of the Dog is a brilliant addition to the Dog Walker Mystery series and I
find myself looking forward to the next book in Judi McCoy’s fabulous series.
