Lord of Always
How does a good and honorable man atone for wicked deeds he committed when he
was neither good nor honorable? How does he tell the woman forced to marry him of the
supernatural event that transformed his life, cleansing him of the darkness? Above all,
how does he convince his wife that he loves her, that he too is worthy of being loved,
when all she feels for him is hatred? Evan Richmond, a spoiled, debauched aristocrat,
is confronted by an obligation he can’t ignore. He must marry, and Brenna Hilliard is to
be his bride. On his wedding night, Evan commits an unforgivable sin, stirring the wrath
of something beyond this world. In the guise of a raging storm, he is “struck”
unconscious. When he awakens his life is forever changed, for he no longer carries the
soul he was born with. Another has taken its place.
Lord of Always is a story of reincarnation and redemption. Evan is dissolute, crass,
and has let his body and good looks go to seed. The only person he cares about is his
twin sister, possibly more depraved than he is. Brenna is the legitimized by-blow of an
aristocrat, who is sold in marriage by her older legitimate half-brother once their father
dies. She’s a strong character, willing to stand up for her rights. After her horrific
wedding night, she isn’t inclined to trust Evan even though he seems changed. She
finally recognizes his soul from some ancient past and comes to love him.
The reincarnated being in Evan wasn’t as interesting, however. I wasn’t as drawn in to
his character as I was to Brenna’s. Sadly, his character could have used a little more
spicenot evil, certainly, but some heat. Several of the secondary characters had
potential, such as Riley, the manservant, or Evan’s parentsthey were kind and it would
have been interesting to get more insight into how these two warm people ended up
with the degenerate twins. The most interesting character besides Brenna was
Evangeline, Evan’s twin. She was beautiful, crazy, jealous, and threateninga satisfying
villainess.
